National Nut Day
One of my clients has a sign at their door that says “My family tree is filled with nuts”. I can’t help but chuckle when I see it. Which brings me to National Nut Day! I actually love these crazy “National whatever day” because it gives me a chance to talk about different foods and how they can either help our health or how it creates disease. Did you know there are over 300 varieties of nuts!! They are a fantastic source of many nutrients such as calcium, iron, zinc and the very important magnesium. As, I wrote in a previous blog, magnesium is so important in maintaining balance within our bodies, and nuts are a great source of magnesium. Nuts also contain many of the B vitamins, vitamin E, protein but they are mostly made up of fats. Not too worry its the unsaturated fats that are good for us. It is best to avoid those nuts that are salted and/or roasted because any added salt is not good for us and the roasting process can destroy the delicate fats, minerals and the B vitamins. It is important to properly store them in a sealed container in the fridge or freezer to prevent them from going rancid. Enjoy National Nut Day just make sure they are raw, unsalted and only a handful! If you have any questions with nuts or need help with your nutrition please feel free to contact me. Happy eating!
